Diagnostic Ultrasound

Diagnostic Ultrasound

Advanced Imaging for Accurate Diagnosis

Safe, Precise, and Radiation-Free Evaluation

Diagnostic ultrasound is a powerful, noninvasive tool that allows our specialists to see inside the soft tissues of the foot and ankle with exceptional clarity. Unlike X-rays, which only show bone, ultrasound captures detailed images of ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves. This makes it an ideal choice for identifying conditions that often cause pain but remain hidden with standard imaging. At InStride Foot & Ankle of the Carolinas, Dr. Eric Ward and Dr. Blaise Woeste use state-of-the-art ultrasound technology in-office, providing patients with accurate diagnoses and immediate treatment options without the need for outside referrals.

When Is Ultrasound Used?

Our podiatrists may recommend diagnostic ultrasound for a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Morton’s neuroma
  • Bursitis or soft tissue swelling
  • Bunions and hammertoes
  • Ankle sprains and ligament injuries
  • Tendinitis and plantar fasciitis
  • Detecting foreign bodies or loose tissue

Ultrasound can also be used to guide injections with pinpoint accuracy or as part of therapeutic ultrasound treatment for pain relief and healing.

What to Expect During the Procedure

A diagnostic ultrasound is quick, painless, and completely radiation-free. A conductive gel is applied to the foot or ankle, and a small handheld probe is moved gently over the area of concern. The probe sends sound waves into the tissue, which bounce back to create real-time images displayed on a high-definition screen. This allows your podiatrist to carefully evaluate the problem and recommend the most effective treatment plan right away.

Ultrasound vs. X-Ray

X-rays are excellent for diagnosing fractures and other bone conditions. However, when it comes to soft tissue issues like ligament tears, tendon injuries, or neuromas, diagnostic ultrasound provides superior detail. In some cases, both X-ray and ultrasound may be used together to give a complete picture of bone and soft tissue health, ensuring no aspect of your condition is overlooked..
